He is a graduate of Lincoln College, Canterbury Fresh Zealand and Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia. Currently he is on the national executive of the New Zealand Agronomy Society and the Canterbury executive of the New Zealand Institute of Agricultural and Horticultural Science. Murray lives in North Canterbury where he also has a small farm, running cattle. Projects have included field, pot and product trials as well as grower surveys.
He is actively involved in the development and training of best practices for fertilizer use. Murray’s career began with five years working for the Fresh South Wales Department of Agriculture, Sydney, Australia. This was followed by 19 years in the New Zealand fertilizer industry for Ravensdown fertilizer Co op Ltd, Christchurch in various senior agronomic, research and extension roles. Murray, has helped Massey University staff pioneer the agronomic benefits of precision farming in the arable sector. Joint work with New Zealand center for Precision Agriculture Massey University, FAR, Ravensdown and balance Agrinutrients, with financial promote from Agmardt, AF Sustainable Farming Fund.
Murray is one of New Zealand ’s leading experts on soil and plant nutrition in pasture and crops with over 37 years experience in these fields. He also has qualifications in Adult Teaching and is a Certified Nutrient Management Adviser. He has played a leading role in the development of fertilizer guidelines for parched land Fresh Zealand and the use of sulphur in hill and lofty country. Arable Precision Agriculture a series of studies identifying variability on arable farms showing the economic and agronomic benefits of farming to soil, moisture and nitrogen constraints.
Individual and collaborative research projects for companies, industry groups and research institutes. While there, Murray carried out and published many nutrient trials in pastures and crops, wrote advisory pamphlets as healthy as training and supporting field staff. Murray is well known for big-hearted sound, autonomous nutritional advice to pastoral, arable, horticultural, amenity farmers and growers in New Zealand. He has helped prosper crop nutrition models, fertilizer codes of practice and has assisted in the extension and training of these.
Teaching and writing pasture production and hydroponic student notes have helped donate Murray a wider perspective in making fertilizer management decisions. He has developed guidelines on the forms of sulphur and phosphorus to use in pastoral farming. Many of his ideas and research findings are now established farmer and grower practices. Soil remediation, waste winery and other effluent discharges and management.
